Roy Harper Charged With Child Sex Offenses

According to the BBC, folk singer Roy Harper has been charged with sexually abusing a minor. Per the report, the abuse began in 1972, when the female victim was 12 years old, and continued until 1975. (The current charges pertain to a single victim).

Harper, 72, is perhaps best known for providing vocals on “Have A Cigar,” from Pink Floyd’s 1975 album Wish You Were Here. He was also the inspiration for Led Zeppelin’s “Hats Off To (Roy) Harper.” Over the course of a nearly half-century career, Harper released 23 studio albums. Recently, he’s been touted as an influence by Fleet Foxes and Joanna Newsom. In addition to touring with Harper, Newsom performed at his 70th birthday celebration at London’s Royal Festival Hall, and she has claimed in interviews that Harper’s 1971 LP Stormcock was a significant influence on her 2006 album Ys.

Harper is due to appear before Hereford Magistrates’ Court on Monday, November 11.
