For the non-Americans out there, this is probably all a bit hard to process, but one of our goofiest annual traditions is that every year, right around Thanksgiving, the president will “pardon” exactly one turkey, thus, in effect, condemning millions more to death. It’s just a thing we do. And you’re never going to believe this, but Morrissey has some issues with this whole practice. In a new open letter, characteristically titled “Thankskilling,” he outlines those problems. It’s surprisingly short and to-the-point for a Morrissey op-ed, and you can read it below.

Morrissey writes:

Please ignore the abysmal example set by President Obama who, in the name of Thanksgiving, supports torture as 45 million birds are horrifically abused; dragged through electrified stun baths, and then have their throats slit. And President Obama laughs. Haha, so funny!

As Ingrid Newkirk from PETA points out, turkey ’meat’ is one of “our nation’s top killers”, causing heart-attacks and strokes in humans due to saturated animal fats and cholesterol. And President Obama laughs.

Further, the meat industry is responsible for 51% of human-caused greenhouse-gas emission, therefore the embarrassingly stupid White House ’turkey pardon’ is open support for a viciously cruel and environmentally irresponsible industry.

And President Obama laughs.

If there’s ever a Smiths reunion album, And President Obama Laughs would be a perfectly acceptable title.

Moz’s live recording of “Satellite Of Love” will be out as a digital single next week. He’ll also perform at this year’s Nobel Peace Prize event in Oslo, 12/11.

    • Yeah, cause he single handedly ruined America by lowering unemployment and trying to give you health insurance. And he made it rain on your birthday, too!

        • Dude, I’m totally with you, but let’s not get political here.

        • Wow. Imagine that. The POTUS lies. OMGosh! REALLY?! It’s unheard of for a politician to lie. SMDH. Bush didn’t lie, did he? Nah! Politicians really want to help the people that put them in office. They don’t even want to be compensated for their public service!

Good lawd! Grow the frak up and realize that you’re a part of a country that is run by the rich who want nothing more than to thin the herd.

End the self pity party and get up off your arse and do something positive!

        • “Since the day he’s been elected, he’s done close to nothing to help cure the unemployment crisis or improve the job market whatsoever”

You do realize that the percentage of unemployed Americans is lower now than when he entered office? This is a fairly impressive feat considering his first few months of his tenure were the harshest months for layoffs during the recession (which he didn’t start.)

I agree that its uncertain what the long-term effects of the stimulus program will be, but in the meantime he’s actually done a pretty good job and stopping the bleeding in the housing market and unemployment levels, to the point where both are actually stronger than when he took over.

I don’t want to sound like an Obama apologist, but it really grinds my gears to hear the same generic anti-government complaints about things that aren’t even true. If you want to point a finger at “things not getting done” then point it at the broken bipartisan senate.

      • “Is as terrible and as big of an embarrassment as George W. Bush”

Thanks for disqualifying yourself from rational argument.

      • i don’t need gold plated dinnerware at thanksgiving when i have you spelling it all from fox news, grandpa

    • I think you need to accept the possibility of a president so excellent we don’t understand him yet

  2. Can we assume Morrissey was the “dogmatic asshole” that sent Grimes that message?

    Thanks, Moz!

  3. I was working for some Americans last year and we had a thanksgiving meal. There were marshmallows in the sweet potatoes, not even for dessert but at the same time as the turkey, stuffing, cornbread etc. For dessert there were about seven different kinds of pie (key lime, pecan, pumpkin, chocolate, etc.). I made some middling-to-good jokes and conversation with my American hosts, even though they were my employers, and none of them understood irony. Also all of this took place in a converted barn in rural Holland.

  4. Thanks. Obama.

  5. Morrissey just seems like a real fun guy to sit down and have a beer with!

  6. i need a morrissey filter on my internet..

  7. Is it just me or is anybody else sick and tired of this fella?

  8. It’s funny that he titled his letter “Thankskilling” since in the other ThanksKilling Turkey is also one of the top killers in the nation.

  10. Morrisey just crossed the line.

Criticizing Thanksgiving is about as un-American as taking a dump on apple pie.

  11. Is it weird that I read all of Morrissey’s rants in my head with the voice of Professor Snape?

  12. Morrissey is wrong on the 51%, it’s actually a little less than 15% (14.5% still an impressive number, IMO)

  13. damn, I was hoping he was going to rant about Black Friday cause fuck that day.

  14. Ok, so I’m a vegetarian and I happen to love Thanksgiving (minus the meat). Morrissey, I love you. You need to realize that there is a happy medium here: just don’t eat the turkey. Eating copious amounts of stuffing and cranberry sauce should do the trick. I realize the point here is about killing all those turkeys, but, Moz, you’re a Brit. Leave Thanksgiving to us Yankees.

  15. Totally on board with Michael_ here… You can call me old, or privileged or whatever you want to name call me as. Obama HAS created SOME Jobs. Government Jobs. The “Unemployment Number” has NOT decreased since Obama has been in office. It INCREASED TREMENDOUSLY, and then has been going down, but is not down to where it was when he took office.

The Private Sector is what is suffering here, and more people are going on food stamps than ever before. People are suffering, but for the Government to take control over providing for all of these people everything that they need is not the way to handle it. Hence why there is no desire to get out of a bad situation. Free Phones and Money and Healthcare is too good of a “deal” for some to try to work hard or work at all. Reminds me of the time when I got out of college (which I paid for myself by working 2 jobs), and I said that I can’t get a job. I wasn’t LOOKING for a job.

Today there ARE no jobs because everyone is sitting tight because of the policies that Obama Rammed through in his first 2 years. I own a small business, and am getting more and more EFFED every day because of the policies put in place.

People are suffering, I try to do my part to help, and I pay taxes. There are things that government can do to help, but invading our privacy, building a Giant Data Collection Tool to use help people get out and vote for those that will give you things.

Look at both sides, do your own analysis, make your own decisions. Don’t be a sheep.

Oh, and keep Politics off of StereoGum for the benefit of EVERYONE!!!!!!
