“If ‘Morning Becomes Eclectic’ had a Friendster page, its ‘Favorite Music’ section would include Massive Attack, Radiohead, Zero 7, Bjork, Moby, Air, Tom Waits, the Blue Nile, Jeff Buckley, Juana Molina, Rufus Wainwright, the Eels, Aimee Mann, My Bloody Valentine, Caetano Veloso, DJ Shadow, the Trash Can Sinatras, and Petra Haden.”
NY Times talks to “the country’s most important disc jockey.”

Today’s ‘Eclectic’ guest is Stephen Malkmus.

Also re: DJ Shadow, finally picked up that nice Endtroducing Deluxe Edition. Here’s a sample.

Awesome interview. I have volunteered at the station before, and Nic is a very cool and nice guy. Thank God for KCRW, KEXP, WFUV, and all stations like it.

  4. Check out WOXY.com, they have an ad on the site actually, that’s a great station too.

  5. let me throw the newer Minnesota Public Radio station, KCMP into the mix:

Indie-Yuppie Hitmaker Extraordinaire. Now we know who to hunt down and kill for foisting Aqualung on the world.

  10. ok, my turn!
gotta big up wdet-fm public radio in detroit, and specifically dj liz copeland. she knows what’s up.

  11. Eleni Mandell would be in that list of ‘Favorite Music’ too. Great singer.

If Morning Becomes Eclectic had a Friendster page, it would probably be the year 2001.

  13. not to rain on the guy’s parade, but you cant be the most Important dj if you dont break any bands. yes nic gets to cherry pick all the hip new indie acts but his show and “influence” means nothing.

it if did wilco would have never been dropped.

  14. That Shadow mp3 makes me think the deluxe edition isn’t worth the cash.

  15. I imagine the deluxe is just the extra versions included on the “midnight…” single. if you have that, don’t bother with the deluxe. there are much better versions on the single.

  16. “The country’s most important disk jockey” is a distinction about as noteworthy as being “the country’s funniest bricklayer”. Possibly less.

  17. Neil> I agree; that mix sucks. He needs to create new music and stop re-hashing shit. Endtroducing is one of the greatest electronic albums ever and simply shouldn’t be fucked with.

  18. I’ve never understood the big deal about Morning Becomes Eclectic or KCRW. It’s a slightly edgier Adult Album Alternative format. The bands tend to be on majors already, the music choices are fairly safe. It has its place, but what’s the big deal?

And let’s not pretend Nic H. is some sort of American John Peel. Please.
