Jim James – “Turn Your Lights Down Low” (Bob Marley Cover)

Don’t ever let anybody tell you Bob Marley is lame. It’s not his fault he got turned into a dorm-room icon for America’s bros or that many people annoyingly don’t go any further into his catalog than Legend. (Shout out to my best man John Ross for taking me slightly deeper into Marley’s world, even if I’m mostly still an annoying Legend person.) Marley wrote dozens of amazing songs, and “Turn Your Nights Down Low” is certainly among them, a love ballad for the ages couched in the same warm sonic embrace that guides “No Woman, No Cry.” And My Morning Jacket’s Jim James has done it justice with this cover he recorded for the Sweetheart 2014 comp, another Starbucks collection of your favorite musicians doing their favorite love songs just in time for Valentine’s Day. Fiona Apple, Vampire Weekend, Phosphorescent, and Beck are also on the tracklist. Check out James’ Marley cover below; it’ll make you sigh wistfully, I swear.
