So who’s hitting Coney Island on Saturday? I’m pretty psyched about this line-up.

It’ll be hard to get motivated to show up early if there are thunderstorms, as tempting as soggy funnel cake may be. Which of the afternoon acts are not to be missed?

Sirens’ keeps audiences laughing
When I saw it at the festival, I did not stop laughing from curtain rise to ... but the situation is complicated when Sam hears the fabled song of the Siren and jumps overboard. “Pretty much everyone who hears the Siren’s song jumps ship, drowns ...

you have to catch q and not u cos they’re breaking up.

also, dungen and diamond nights are necessary.

    oh,

    FIRST.

  2. Diamond Nights, hands down!

Also, Tommie Sunshine should be very entertaining. He plays the crowd well and should avoid shitty house music, etc.

  3. I say dont miss spoon, but Im the only one I know who loves spoon…

I would say The Dears. Their show last month at Bowery Ballroom was AMAZING, though I’m wondering what it’s going to be like seeing them in the middle of the day. Even if you don’t like the album — and a lot of people don’t — give them a chance live. They’re something else.

Diamond Nights will be good. Thier particular brand of cock rock should translate well to outdoor setting.

And Totonno’s Pizza (on Neptune) is the best in the city. No slices!

Anyone hear anything about the new My Morning Jacket leak?

  6. Anyone hear anything about the new My Morning Jacket leak?

  7. The Dears…. Hands down.

Nice busy moving banner ad for shitty remake you got going on here.

  9. Alex  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

Go check out Nine Black Alps and you’ll catch some good rock tunes. I recently listened to their EP and they’re a lot of fun for a band no one has really heard of yet.

I don’t know, I just can’t seem to get excited for Siren this year. It figures: each previous year, I lived far enough away that I couldn’t make the trip, yet thought the lineups were incredible. This year, I live here, and I’m totally blah about it. Oh well. Meh.

Ambulance Ltd. – it’s such a shame that Brandon Flowers got all the love on their joint tour, and none was left over.

The only real “must-see” act on this bill (aside from the aforementioned pre-disbanding Q and Not U) is playing first, and that’s Detachment Kit. Saul Williams might be worthwhile, also…

  13. Other than the gap between Amulance and Diamond Nights it’s a good day for music. The Dungen/Benson/Spoon three-fer will keep me at the main stage for a while.

  14. Night One, fer sure. Q And Not U are great (and, as it’s been said twice, breaking up), Dungen is pretty awesome, and SPOON!! Oh man, I love Spoon. Do it for me, Scott, (though you don’t know me), as I’m in London all summer and have missed Spoon almost half a dozen times now. Do it for me…

  15. Lance  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

Surprised no one has mentioned VHS or Beta… I have seen these guys 3 times now and they are great.

  16. I’m going to be repetitive and cast my vote for Q and not U as well – and Felicia, you’re not the only one who likes Spoon, Britt Daniels is my hero!

  17. I’m new when it comes to Spoon, but their newest album is excellent! -And Saul Williams, I’d like to catch his show.

  18. rockrgrrl  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

Nine Black Alps + Tottono’s pizza sound like a perfect day. (My friend from London brought the NBA CD back for me — the whole thing is amazing.)

  19. Calliwell  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

Q and Not U, and The Dears.

    Fin.

  20. johnnyclash  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

Brendan Benson. No question. If it’s rainy and overcast he’ll make the sun come out. He’s just that good. Also will cast a vote for Q and Not U for aforementioned reasons.

  21. i think the detachment kit is incredible. i haven’t seen the live show, but their last two reocrds are excellent.

  22. definitely ambulance ltd.

  23. BRENDAN BENSON.

I am jealous. Why do I have to live in Tennessee?

  24. oooh. I’d see Brendan too…he’s fabulous. And Be Your Own Pet.

    soggy funnel cake…grody.

  25. that IS a dang good line-up! yay brendan benson! got my tix for his july 27 show here in san diego.

  26. Mates of State! am i the only one that likes them? and VHS or Beta is great.

  27. be your own pet is amazing. I saw them open for beep beep four or five months ago. Check them out if only for the fact that they are still in high school

  28. Another vote for Q and not U.

Since when are Mates of State listed in such large letters?

  29. Ambulance, Dungen, and Dears.

I love Spoon on record, but they’re really not that great live…

  30. VHS or Beta are so much fun live. I am anxious to hear the Diamond Nights play.

  31. Wow, looks like all the good bands went to Chicago this weekend… this doesn’t even stack up to last year’s fest or even Bonaroo.

It’s the indie farm teams plus special appearance by Spoon.

  32. Chuck  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

Q and Not U? Mates of State?

that’s enough for the festival to kick tons of bum.

  33. jane  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

I agree with the comment about not stacking up to last year OR bonnaroo. My don’t miss bands of the day are in Chicago, so I will be drinking on the beach and swimming.

  34. Josh  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

Definitely Ambulance ltd, they put on a tight show irregardless of their pretentious name. And I have to disagree with Bza, saw spoon at the TLA last month and they rocked live. That was the first time I had seen them but from what I heard people saying they had really improved their live show apparently

  35. Ambulance!! I actually saw them open for VHS or Beta earlier this year, and highly recommend seeing both bands play, they’re amazing! And I’ve seen Spoon twice, and would see them five more times. That may or may not be because I think Britt is sexy.

  36. fleurit  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

Brendan Benson is a great musician with great records, but he can be hit-and-miss on stage a la Cat Power. He can be his worst enemy live. Word to the wise: saw Dungen in LA last weekend and it was an experience completely demistifying the shambolic hype enveloping this band. They have one (ONE, count it, reader) good song, which they perform early in the show. Then it’s pure capes & flutes Deep Purpl-ish silliness. And they sing in Swedish. Total hokum. Ambulance is a sham too…God this is actually a very shitty lineup. Except for Brendan. Village Voice can’t do better than THIS?

  37. john  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

I saw Spoon supporting Interpol in Dublin back in April
I have to say they were very dissapointing live-
The “umm ahh, umm uum ahh…” just wasn’t the same.
Maybe they just werent bothered with Ireland!!
I’d like to see Diamond nights though.

  38. diamonds nights i’d check out for an app. benson is the entree. and for dessert, spoon.

  39. Nocturne  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

I love Ambulance ltd. I met 3/4 of them when I ran production at Voodoo Fest last year. Really nice guys and appreciative of their fans. They played a great set too!

  40. greg  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

MATES OF STATE, yo. see them and love them immediately

  41. kevin  |   Posted on Jul 14th, 2005

this line up is really sad.

  42. Tannis  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2005

I love spoon and Saul Williams. Too bad im not going.

  43. clearly q and not u. this will be your last chance (probably) to see them. and ambulance ltd. of course.

  44. adam  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2005

be your own pet are the future of rock n roll so it is only polite to go and see the young ones at work. nine black alps were a huge let down when i saw them the other day as were dungen last month. vhs or beta are where its at though and saul william is good if you’re into that stuff

  45. brendan benson for sure. saw him in denver… he rocks.

  46. olive.  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2005

    felicia–

    i love. love. love spoon.

and, on a superficial note, britt daniel is on my top five people i want to sleep with list… but that’s besides the point.

i also really enjoyed them live, personally… maybe i’m just retarded.

  47. kevin  |   Posted on Jul 16th, 2005

Nine Black Alps and The Dears.
