Marissa Nadler

There’s been a lot of talk about how Marissa Nadler’s new album, July, shows the Boston-based songwriter at her darkest. But that’s not too surprising when you think about what last year was like for Nadler: She opened for Swans, signed to Sacred Bones, and dropped the creepily beautiful “Dead City Emily.” It gets more intense when you realize July was recorded by Randall Dunn whose handiwork has graced the best of the Southern Lord roster, including Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room, Earth, and Boris. The credit all belongs to Nadler, though, whose deathly folk comes into its own here. Listen to the full album via NPR.

July is out 2/4 via Sacred Bones.

  1. One of the very best albums of this year so far.
And it will be in my year’s end list, as always.
Marissa’s music is a thing of absolute sadness and beauty.
