We kicked this week off with coverage of the Grammys and the public apologies to Kendrick Lamar and Trent Reznor that came in its aftermath. Daft Punk won big, but had to take their helmets off at the airport like the rest of us. On the reunion front, we heard from Afghan Whigs, Fleetwood Mac, Slowdive, and Black Flag. We also talked about Dookie turning 20, Elliott Smith turning EDM, and Burial coming out of hiding. Are you ready for some bing-a-bong-a-bong-a-bong-football? Share your Super Bowl predictions below because I can’t help you there.

“If I had a dollar for every time I heard you guys on the radio….I’d probably have a lot of dollars….right?!?!….right? I’m entirely unsure right now.”

I’m fairly certain Chris Booker thought they were Imagine Dragons.

Yeah I mean I guess it’s good that he realizes how obviously bullshit it is that GKMC didn’t win, but the whole thing has a somewhat disingenuous, self congratulatory feel to it with him posting his own apology to fucking Instagram…

It was a total humble-bragging “look at me, I’m a nice guy” PR move.

I think this is great, Stereogum comments could use a little humility

Except for the fact that you aren’t showing humility/being humble when you post your own apology to social media. If Kendrick had posted it that’s one thing, but for Macklemore to post it? Sorry, that’s just begging to be patted on the back and told how great you are. Again.

Oh, and as for rap needing a little humility, that comment just demonstrates a complete lack of understanding for the art form.

THIS WEEK’S 5 LOWEST RATED COMMENTS

There is only one thing worse than the Grammys, and that is music blog comments about the current state of hip-hop. Thanks, Stereogum, now I have Hyper-AIDS which is in a state of quantum entanglement with Cyborg-Hitler from Earth, v.2.03.47-beta, just by reading this.

This song also makes me believe that the reason the last album sounded so good was because of Albini, but now he’s back to sounding like he’s in a tin room like the first album.

If you don’t see the hypocrisy in him calling someone a “whiny piece of shit” when he’s made a career out of lyrics where he’s mostly whining and feeling like a piece of shit, and has used Twitter to do just the same, then you are probably just being blindly biased to your beloved junk punk band.

Crucify the truth, hail the famous indie celeb with sociopathic tendencies because he makes music you like…

Vampy Weeks?!?!? Has Stereogum been taken over by 14 yr old girls/20 yr old gays???

Perfect day for him to debut this since I just the other day let everyone here know how much of a hypocritical dick he is.

Song is okay at best. No future, but mostly stuck in the past.

Wow, the use of that song does a spectacular job of representing the bear’s desire for that yogurt.

  1. The best part about the Cloud Nothings non-troversy is that some web site picked up the story, mixed me up with Michael Nelson, tabloidized it into being some huge online rumble between artist and journalist, and just made a bigger fool out of themselves than I did of me. They of course apologized to Michael Nelson and Stereogum, but when I caught wind of it, I pointed out that their article — published well after my comments — picked only the whiny comments I made, omitted the settled down ones, and ignored the fact that I wrote this positive review of Cloud Nothings single reflecting on the events. But of course they aren’t going to apologize to the nobody DIY blogger and of course they aren’t going to tell readers the full story. I called them out on their terrible journalism and they ended up removing the post altogether:

    http://mysocialist.com/blog/2014/01/28/30770/

The next day, the web site ran an article entitled “It’s a Trend: All Music Teachers Are Pervs Now” where they basically called all music teachers pedophiles.

And y’all wonder why I get rattled.

    • at least they got you confused with mikey nel – guy’s a god

      • You tell me, newly minted troll account created just to post this comment. It wouldn’t surprise me if you were a My Social List hack writer who read my first comment, are being all defensive about it and are trying to deflate attention away from the site’s lack of professionalism this past week by writing my post off as nothing that she be cared about.

Which is ironic because that’s just my point altogether: A site with 40,200+ followers on Twitter fabricated a very poorly researched “controversy” by picking and choosing comments written in these pages by Stereogum readers and twisting them into a bigger story than it actually was. It was on its front page as the top story for an entire day even after it was amended to state Michael Nelson pointed out he didn’t write the comments, and didn’t disappear until soon after I took it up myself to post the reality of the situation (the comments they failed to include in their article, my eventual happy ending post on my blog, etc.)

So why should you care? If that doesn’t trouble anyone here about the modern day “professional” music journalism on largely read publications, then we’re in for some dark, dark days.

  3. General rule of thumb, no matter how right or measured you think your criticism is, just avoid posting on things about bands or music you don’t like. You will get downvoted mercilessly.

Unless its about Imagine Dragons. Don’t nobody like that shit.

  4. If you asked stereogum commenters what the first album they bought was what would the top 5 results be? Dookie would definately be in there, other 4??

For the record I think the first album I ever bought was “Off the Deep End” by Weird Al

  5. Pete Seeger died this week. I’m a little disappointed he got no mention on this site considering how much he’s done for music.

  6. BIG UPS to pickpocket this week who helped crack the code of the “Out of Print” Wild Beasts Deluxe LP with The Field remix. That’s what this site is all about, coming together to help each other like music more.
