The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

straight2video

Why did everyone release their darkest and most fucked vidoes this week? Is it just too cold for some fun, sunny music videos? Are we experiencing a collective dark night of the soul? Or is it just fun to put blood in videos? Our especially grim picks for the week are below.

5. Andy Winter – “Uncountably Infinite” (NSFW-ish) (Dir. Misty Greer)

They didn’t linger, but I got genuine bona-fide creep-vibes from those opening seconds, and creep-vibes are not necessarily an easy thing to conjure.

4. Tree – “Like Whoa” (Dir. Dr. Dax)

I lived in Chicago for two and a half years, and I never got used to the winters. It takes a lot to make me miss Chicago in February, but this video did it.

3. Prodigy – “IMDKV” (NSFW-ish) (Dir. Tha Profitt)

Prodigy more or less brought rap videos into the internet age with his awesomely horrific “Mac 10 Handle” video, so when he points a blood-crusted spiked bat at the camera, I pay attention.

2. Angel Olsen – “Hi-Five” (Dir. Zia Anger)

A big part of the (amazing) song’s appeal is the casual plainspoken quality of the lyrics, and that disappears a bit when the video goes into Sprockets art-dance territory. But it all comes back in that final shot, and all is forgiven. And anyway, even without the final shot, Olsen’s enormous presence would be enough to place the video on this list.

1. Xiu Xiu – “Stupid In The Dark” (NSFW-ish) (Dir. Zia Anger)

Xiu Xiu are the sort of group who aims to skeeve us out at every possible turn, so you sort of have to judge their work on how much it skeeves you out. This video skeeves me out absolutely and completely.
