Neneh Cherry - Blank Project

On her 1989 debut Raw Like Sushi, Neneh Cherry, the Swedish-born and London-based daughter of jazz great Don, sang and rapped with dangerous levels of style and helped create a snarling-cool blueprint that people like Lauryn Hill and M.I.A. would, to some extent, follow. After 1996’s Man, she largely retired from music to raise kids. But last year, she teamed up with the Scandinavian jazz combo the Thing for The Cherry Thing, a great and underrated album of covers. And now she’s back with Blank Project, her first true solo album in 18 years. Four Tet produced the entire album, and his buzzing, queasy bass makes a strong match for her seasoned rasp and still-formidable sass. We’ve posted the title track, “Everything,” and the Robyn collab “Out Of The Black,” and now the whole album, which you should really hear, is streaming at NPR.

Blank Project is out 2/25 on Smalltown Supersound.
