In previous years, Damon McMahon’s New York psych-rock crew Amen Dunes have prided themselves in knocking out records quickly and mercilessly. But Love, the new album that the band has just announced, is the product of more than a year of hard studio labor. Amen Dunes recorded most of the album in Montreal, with Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s David Bryant and Efrim Menuck producing, and the album has a ton of guest musicians: Various Godspeed members, Colin Stetson, Iceage/Vår frontman Elias Bender Ronnenfelt. Ronnenfelt sings on lead single “Lonely Richard,” a spacey staring-into-the-sun country-rock lope, though good luck picking his voice out of the thicket of twanging guitars and scraping violins.
