Protomartyr album cover

Detroit post-punks Protomartyr emit a warm glow that, given the ferocity that unfurls when their songs kick into high gear, suggests a hellish smoldering core beneath the surface. Yet “Come & See,” the second single from upcoming sophomore set Under Color Of Official Right, is graceful and under control, the work of a band that knows how to marshal its energy for maximum dramatic power, a band with changeups and sliders rather than just fastballs. Whereas “Scum, Rise!” channeled wide-eyed anxiety in a manner that resembled Iceage, the Nick Cave-reminiscent “Come & See” strikes me as what the National might sound like after a week in the gutter or a month at the gym. 1. Wow, even better than “Scum, Rise!” Or, at least, more accessible. I really am loving everything this band has put out so far. Their new album is highly anticipated for sure.

  2. Super under-rated band. I really hope I get to see them at SXSW.
