Pharrell - G I R L

Pharrell Williams, who is not a vampire, follows up a prosperous 2013 with his second studio album G I R L next week. The 10-track LP features Oscar contender “Happy” and guest appearances from Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Daft Punk, and Alicia Keys. You can stream it now at iTunes First Play.

G I R L is out 3/3 on Columbia.

  1. Yawn.

  2. Rick Ross’s “Mastermind” is streaming at iTunes as well

  3. Wait a minute, I’m pretty sure this is excellent. I honestly don’t know why I expected anything but.

Pretty sure he just dropped the mic square in the middle of “Lost Queen”…that was kind of incredible. There’s a “Blow” response in here as well. This is quite strong…lush…sumptuous…very reminiscent of the first 20/20 but those songs were so overwrought. Worst thing you can say about this is its cloying.

But Pharrell is so sexy! Loving this. Now about this iTunes thing…

  4. I’d like to take a moment to apologize to all girls that exist on Pharrell’s behalf. These songs kinda suck.

The lack of juxtaposition and contrast makes for a very one-note album. It’s all quite literally jangling tuxedo music for people in tuxedos. His first record was a mess (and really hasn’t aged well, at all) but at least there he seemed to showcase a sense of adventure. I don’t know, man. I just think Pharrell’s capable of way more than this tired Frank Sinatra shit. I didn’t like it when Justin Timberlake did it and I don’t like it here.

I heard Happy on an amazing system at a party a couple weeks ago and fell in love with what I once considered an “adult contemporary Christian pop song”. I’m not sure if the rest of the record will have a similar fate with me (more than likely it won’t), but I am disappointed in an album I was secretly hoping was more than 10 quick-grab songs that don’t really live up to the splendor its title.

  5. Very excited for this album, but I haven’t updated my iTunes since JT 20/20 Experience was released on streaming. Might be faster to wait until it drops officially on 3/3…

  6. Gush is such a smooth, sexy track. I’m basically drooling from my ears listening to it (ok, that sounds weird).

  7. Pharrell is my dude but this album is weak. Maybe 3 decent songs out of 10.

  8. That song with Alicia Keys, though. Such a good groove.
