Beck On SNL

Today, Beck’s Mellow Gold turned 20 years old, and to celebrate, he’s playing Saturday Night Live — for the seventh time in his career — with host Jim Parsons. (Well, to celebrate and maybe also to promote his brand-new release, Morning Phase.) Check out his SNL performance of Morning Phase tracks “Blue Moon” with vocals so drowned in reverb that they seem disembodied even as they emerge from his mouth and “Wave” with an orchestra below. His band includes J. Tillman (Father John Misty).

  1. A Beck x Father John Misty tour would be amazing! I’m disappointed, though, that there was no mention of Shia LaBeouf playing drums or that he was also on SNL to promote his album Morning Phase.

  2. So happy to see the classic line up of Joey Waronker and Justin Meldal Johnson is back. Sounds great! Makes me care about the album more.

  3. I really hope J Tillman isn’t going on tour in Beck’s band… I want another FJM album!

  4. I loved his performance Wave on SNL.

The musicians being named dropped are performers behind big non hipster bands like M83, REM, NIN, Fleet Foxes, Atoms for Peace, Tori Amos and Smashing Pumpkins. They aren’t obscure. People that care about the music they are listening to often care about who made it. We aren’t living in the 50s.

  8. I want to use that reverb in my regular conversations.

  9. Father John is the best. Tillman’s voice and Beck’s make for a ridiculously great harmony there.
