Tune-Yards - Nikki Nack

tUnE-yArDs’ third album, Nikki Nack, is due May 6, and today, its first single is here. Although “Water Fountain” sounds a bit more lushly produced than anything on either of Merrill Garbus’ first two tUnE-yArDs albums, it would be hard to mistake the song for the work of any other artist. It’s ecstatic, endlessly layered and looped Afro-beat-based art pop that builds from a chant to a celebration (with some pretty random digressions and diversions along the way) in a little more than three minutes. Check it out.

  1. This is excellent. I remember hearing her first album and thinking how amazing her songs would be once she got some attention and better production. Second album blew me away. Now this seems to be headed in the right direction!

  2. R.I.P Bank Account (2007-2014)

  3. This seems like a perfectly logical progression and is probably the best song she’s written. I lost interest in her last album pretty quickly, but we’ll see how this one holds up. And is that a fruit rollup on the cover? If so…touche.

  4. Dat bass line…

    This rules.

  5. This is AWESOME!!

  6. I really want to love this but I’m having trouble getting into it on first listen.

  7. I’m glad she’s still a master of merging pop, African rhythms, and jazz. Now she’s added synth to the mix, and somehow made it fit. May just got way more exciting.
