Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

By Scott Lapatine / April 4, 2014 - 8:27 pm

We started off this week with news from Ultra Music Festival, which sounded like a bit of a disaster. Hopefully vibes are more mellow at next weekend’s Coachella (don’t forget your Hydroxycut). Hot off his SNL debut, rising UK soul singer Sam Smith was the subject of The Week In Pop. We looked at the month of March in metal and soundtracks. We saw some entertaining beefs from Robert Smith and Jason Pierce. St. Vincent and Jeff Tweedy stopped by Portlandia. David Letterman announced his retirement, according to R.E.M.’s former bassist’s Twitter. We made a pretty Justin Vernon family free. Jack White was back in action, announcing Lazaretto and promising its title track will be the world’s fastest record. Album Of The Week went to Cloud Nothings (better luck next time, Nick Cannon). And we listed the 10 best songs by Joy Division and, to commemorate 20 years of a world without Kurdt (bka the guy from all those unearthed Seattle PD photos), Nirvana. Relive this week’s best and worst comments below and we’ll all float on OK

THIS WEEK’S 10 HIGHEST RATED COMMENTS

“WHEN WE GO TO SEE AN ARTIST WE ARE FANS OF, WE DON’T WANT THE PERFORMANCE TO END… THAT’S WHAT BEING A FAN MEANS… ISN’T IT?”

Yes, exactly. BRAVO Robert Smith BRAVO.

Personally, I thought her ‘buy a drink’ quip was designed as a simply rhetorical retaliation to Smiths ALL CAP written assault on her, but whatever…hardly the point here.

The shock here is that a writer took an effort to point out a band (playing for a worthy cause, mind you) playing ‘too long?’ If you are going to criticize a show, I’m sorry, but length should not be on the top of any negative commentary regarding the event. How about something like, “…and although the set was a monstrous 45 songs, The Cure came and delivered for the crowd which is quite commendable.”

We’re talking about a band that’s been around for 40 years, and the fact they took to the stage for a 45 song set list may be one of the most devoted gestures any band could have done for their fans or the cause they were there supporting.

As if I needed a reason to love Smith more.

The latest in an increasingly tiresome list of aggressively pointless experiments in anti-songs by the Flaming Lips. Splendid. Wayne Coyne must have more free time on his hands than any other person on the planet.

There’s a 99.99999999% chance this is going to be fucking awful.

But I’ll be holding out hope for that tiny chance that it’s not.
