MGMT on Conan

We are now in the week between Coachella weekends, and that means Southern California is now crawling with bands with relatively open schedules, and at least a few of them will spend their time showing up on L.A.-based late-night talk shows. Last night, that meant MGMT showed up on Conan to do a relatively straightforward rendition of “Cool Song No. 2,” a tricky psych-pop song from the self-titled album that they released last year. I have no idea how to describe what they were wearing, but it was impressive. Watch the performance below.

MGMT is out now on Columbia.

  1. I imagine people who only know MGMT for “Time to Pretend” (or other Oracular hits) from when it was on the radio and haven’t kept up with them since. Then they happen upon Conan last night and see this.

  2. Where is Will Berman?

  3. This album is so underrated. Give the people 10 years to catch up and they’ll be praising MGMT from the rooftops.

  4. I think for “Congratulations” that’ll be true but not this one.

    • Agreed. Congratulations if fantastic, this album is kind of just a mess.

      • Give it time, it’ll make sense after you listen to it enough. Or at least, I think so.

        • It’s been about 6 months now. How much longer will it take?

          • you have to listen to it an infinite number of times. once you familiarize yourself with the terrain, you can appreciate all the intricacies that went into it. i didn’t take mgmt seriously until they came out with their second album. i love this album. however, i’m a little biased. i have an mgmt tattoo… (it’s my only tattoo)
