Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon - Season 1

Nigerian electro-funk musician William Onyeabor has long been a cause célèbre among musicians including Damon Albarn, Dan Snaith, and David Byrne, and in the past year that celebration of Onyeabor’s work has spilled out into the general public. Byrne’s Luaka Bop label released the compilation Who Is William Onyeabor? last year, and this year has brought us the documentary Fantastic Man and Hot Chip’s cover of Onyeabor’s “Atomic Bomb.” There was also a tribute concert in London earlier this month featuring Byrne backed by the Atomic Bomb Band, an all-star lineup including Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney, Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke, and project coordinators Money Mark and Sinkane. That concert is coming to these shores in May, with two New York shows scheduled for this weekend (also featuring Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes and the Rapture’s Luke Jenner) and West Coast dates in San Francisco and Los Angeles next weekend. To kick off the North American series of events, Byrne brought a version of the Atomic Bomb Band to The Tonight Show last night to perform Onyeabor’s awesome “Fantastic Man.” Read Byrne’s behind-the-scenes post here, and watch it unfold below with a band featuring Mahoney, Sinkane, Money Mark, Joshua Redman, and the Lijadu Sisters. Cowboy hats abound.

  1. Onyeabor was a really incredible musician. Wish his stuff was easier to acquire. I managed to hit the Atomic Bomb gig in Bristol on the 2nd, I don’t think I’ve ever danced so much at a gig in my life.

  2. ‘can only be viewed from within the United States’? Man that really sucks in the age of internet and stuff.

  3. Yet another thing that I’d never heard of that David Byrne associated himself with which from now on I will pretend I always knew about.
