Dave Harrington is best known for Darkside, his duo with electronic music producer Nicolas Jaar, but today he shares his debut solo EP. As the guitarist for Darkside, he might unfairly be thought of as the more grounded of the two, pulling Jaar’s spaced productions back to Earth with a recognizable sound, but Before This There Was One Heart But A Thousand Thoughts should help dispel that notion. Over two 10-minute medleys Harrington’s guitar work gets stretched and broken apart into gorgeous drones and ambient drifts. Just as psychedelic as the duo’s 2013 debut, Psychic, it will make you rethink the role he plays in that project, but only in hindsight, because when you’re actually listening it’s hard to focus on anything except how trippy this all sounds.
