Chance The Rapper

Chance The Rapper is arguably the most prominent member of this year’s XXL Freshman class, and he’s the first to record a video freestyle for the magazine. Interestingly enough, though, Chance’s freestyle, despite his name, really doesn’t involve rapping at all. Instead, it’s more of a singing plus slam-poetry-about-god-creating-us type of situation. It is messy, and it’s a curious indicator of where Chance’s head is at after all his success. Check it out below.

That T-shirt is amazing, though.

  1. I could actually by this as an actual un-written freestyle. Dig it.

  2. There was nothing messy about this. Kid is smart.

  3. Hey SG, you misspelled awesome.

  4. I love this new slam-ish direction he’s taking. Just cause he isn’t rhyming at the end of the line doesn’t mean this is bad. There’s mad rhythm to it, and dope rhymes all over the place.

He’s gonna push rap in cool directions.

  5. Amazing lyrically, and Chance is amazing at throwing emotion into his voice.

  6. I don’t like the god stuff, but I think it’s clever and he got dat flow.

  7. Very cool and very Chicago. Reminds me of Malcolm London or something from Louder than a Bomb. The extremely awesome Chicago slam scene often gets overlooked with all the hype over drill and killing.
