Last year around this time, SAINT PEPSI released the early Bandcamp recordings that led me to write about him as a Band To Watch. Now, less than a year later, Ryan DeRobertis has become the newest artist to sign to Carpark Records, joining the ranks of Dan Deacon, Toro Y Moi, Cloud Nothings, and Speedy Ortiz. To mark the occasion, he has released a remix of a song by another artist on that roster, TEEN, and the two complement each other just right (and not because they both stylize their names in ALL CAPS). TEEN’s recent single “Not For Long” (which we premiered earlier this year) was an especially smooth and psychedelic piece of R&B, which is transformed by DeRobertis into something different but just as exciting. This definitely continues the bright, sunny vibe that was explored on SAINT PEPSI’s wonderful Gin City EP from February, but it also gives the impression that his best work is yet to come.
