To the untrained ear, the songs of the Boston hardcore legends Converge probably sound like frantic tantrums, but the music is actually made up of intricately structured moving parts, all of which combine to create an effect of absolute ferocity. And in their appearance on the podcast Song Exploder, in which musicians dissect their own music, band members Jacob Bannon and Kurt Ballou appeared to discuss the inner workings of “Dark Horse,” the opening track from their great 2009 album Axe To Fall. The appearance is worth a listen if only to hear Ballou, maybe the greatest producer working in noisy underground music right now, talk about the intricacies of his trade. Listen to the episode here.
