Kylie Minogue and Coldplay

Between 1988 and 1989, I spent a year in England, and with the possible exception of Michael Jackson, the Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue was the absolute biggest thing in music in the UK at that time. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is a couple of years older than me, so he lived through that, and there’s a distinct possibility that Kylie was his first celebrity crush. I have to imagine, then, that last night’s Coldplay show in Sydney was a special one for Martin and for Coldplay. The band played the Enmore Theatre, and during the encore, they invited Minogue onstage for two songs. They started out with Minogue’s 1996 Nick Cave duet “Where The Wild Roses Grow,” with Martin doing a predictably thin version of Cave’s baritone. And they followed that up with “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head,” Minogue’s world-conquering 2001 techno-pop anthem. Watch a fan-made video of the performance below.

Shout out to Sydney Coldplay heads for picking up on the “la-la-la” without prompting.
