For nearly two decades, the longtime Boredoms member Yoshimi has also led the experimental, always-evolving side project OOIOO. It’s been four years since Armonico Hewa, their last album, but they’ll follow it up next week with the new LP Gamel. As the title implies this one is inspired by gamelan, the ancient infinite-repeat Indonesian folk music, and it pushes that influence in some strange directions. The album’s tracks range from gorgeous zoned-out minimalism to spazzy day-glo hyper-pop, and you can stream the full album at NPR.
Gamel is out 7/1 on Thrill Jockey.
