Terry Richardson and Sky Ferreira

Terry Richardson became one of the world’s most famous fashion photographers partly because of the intense sexuality in many of his harshly lit portraits, but he may have been taking that further than anyone realized. In recent weeks, a series of models who have worked with Richardson have come forward with stories about him sexually assaulting women he’s worked with, or, at the very least, using a position of power to try for sexual favors. Companies like Target and H&M, who have used Richardson as a photographer on ad campaigns, have said that they won’t work with him again, as have many publications. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga scrapped a video that Richardson directed for her R. Kelly duet “Do What U Want.” But Sky Ferreira, who has worked with Richardson in the past, has come to Richardson’s defense in a lengthy Facebook post. Her post veers off in a few different directions, but it says that she never encountered any problems with Richardson, that he couldn’t have manipulated Gaga into doing anything she didn’t want to do, that the internet will always find ways to demonize people, and that people need to relax about sex. Here’s what she wrote:

As someone who has worked very closely with Terry Richardson on many many many occasions since I was 17 years old I would like to say… from my OWN personal experience: I have never been forced or manipulated into anything. I made a music video with him and I have never felt uncomfortable with Terry & had 99 percent of the creative control. This was before I was “famous”. Allegations are one thing but completely blaming the director isn’t fair aka the Lady Gaga video. It doesn’t matter if you want to be a “role model” or not, it’s your responsibility to be AWARE of what you’re doing. When you’re making & selling pop music for 14 year olds that is just a straight up fact. I’m not against/doubting people that have said they’ve encountered things with him (it’s not my place to say so) but the media acting as if Terry Richardson manipulated Lady Gaga into making a video about getting touched by R-Kelly or whatever is a whole other thing. She is 28 year old woman & fully capable/aware of what she was doing. If she wants to do it is HER choice. Whether I agree with it or not. I’m REALLY insulted that my work is somehow getting dragged into this mess (this is the only place I can actually write about this). Terry has only been a supportive & caring friend to me for a long time. I actually find the whole thing upsetting & have for a while. To say I support sexual abuse beyond hurts me. I’ve experienced it from a very early age until I was 16 years old & have been VERY vocal about it. I am a feminist & work with foundations globally w/ children & women that are victims of sexual abuse. I fight for it every day. To discredit me because I’m friends of someone or my music videos/photos make you feel certain way is YOUR problem. Not mine. Your opinion of someone doesn’t make them who they are I am NOT saying the women who have publicly spoken are at fault or wrong or lying. I hope they get help. I’m disgusted that people use others (victims) pain for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ or someway to help themselves climb the ladder of whatever they are trying to get to. The media & the fucking peanut gallery/trolls on the internet can paint any picture they want of you. They never have the full details. They can manipulate & project an image/persona that benefits them. There are lots of details that we DON’T know about it. There are many reasons & FACTS why I support Terry Richardson that media (basically) refuses to acknowledge. If it were up to the world I would be a racist/heroin addict manufactured robot. Which I’m far from either of those things. Before you judge people off of some article you read off a newspaper or some blog just remember: They are selling you something. The story is to benefit them somehow. It’s only half truth. If that.Basically if one more person has the nerve to ask/tell me that I’ve fucked Terry Richardson, I will slit their fucking throat.People fail to mention the 8,000 men he’s also shot. I had a topless album cover. So fucking what? I don’t necessarily expect people to understand why I did it or like it. The fact that I still have to explain myself or be publicly shamed every time I speak to a journalist about it EIGHT months later is disturbing. Also, if I was using my “tits” to sell anything, my body is worth more than any cash on the entire planet. Not to mention most musicians don’t MAKE ANY money off of fucking sales. There’s a lot more damage being done to the world than the female body. Get a grip.

  1. Gross.

    • Sky Ferreira is just a puppet, controlled by egomaniac fashion designer Marc Jacobs. He discovered her. Jacobs wants to control the entire media. He has great influence on Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Terry Richardson as well. Read the truth about him at STYLEANGELIQUE BLOGSPOT

  2. Wait, is anyone talking about Lady Gaga being coerced? I haven’t even seen a comment thread that made that the central Terry Richardson issue.

  3. I clicked on the article ready to be disgusted but I have to admit… she’s right. You can’t derail a person because of who they choose to work with. Now, I don’t believe Terry Richardson is innocent one bit, I think he’s scum of the earth but if Sky Ferreira enjoys his photography and decides to work with him based on that, I don’t see a problem with that and if it was a positive experience for her, that’s great especially as it would be against the public’s expectations. She has nothing to do with his sexually criminal behavior. Many celebrities have been photographed by Terry Richardson. If any of them say something like, “I don’t know anything about his sexual behavior, I just know it was a good photoshoot,” how can you shame them for that? They’re just saying what they know and don’t want to get involved in something they don’t need to be involved with, can you blame them for not wanting to get involved? I feel the same way about Woody Allen. People were asking Alec Baldwin what he thought about Allen’s possible abuse of his estranged daughter just because he made a movie with him, and that’s just wrong. It’s the press and the gossip magazines being exploitative and they’re doing nothing to help the victims by such exploitation.

    • You absolutely CAN and SHOULD judge someone because of who they chose to work with. If, say, Grimes decided to collaborate with a known sexual predator, would that really have zero effect on your opinion of her?

This reads more like her defending herself and her art but… Even if a friend of yours has been supportive and caring to you, you still need to reconcile the fact that there’s a pretty well-documented (and gross, and manipulative, etc.) pattern of sexual harassment on their part towards others and if your decision is to keep associating with that person, then obviously people are going to react strongly/negatively to that.

    • I agree with you to some extent, however,
These assumptions about her own experience with Terry Richardson probably has something to do with the fact that she’s a young woman. What’s that if not just another way to oppress someone? So why should she be silence about it?

    • Amen. If he is a sexual predator (and it seems very likely he is), he deserves to be prosecuted for his crimes. Just because a person is nice to and hasn’t harmed you personally doesn’t make them a good, upstanding person overall.

  6. “Meanwhile, Lady Gaga scrapped a video that Richardson directed for her R. Kelly duet ‘Do What U Want.’”

    Uh… Kind of inconsistent, no?

  7. I like Sky a lot and appreciate her being so upfront with what she believes. The truth is this= if Terry is innocent (and he has NOT been proven to be guilty) then slandering him and his reputation is indefensible. If he’s done anything criminal and the evidence and charges stick, then we can say what a mighty scumbag he is. But until that point, we’re left with allegations. And so was Oberst from Bright Eyes. And Michael Jackson. So, I side with Sky in that regard. She’s right.

  8. she also says that she doesn’t use drugs and guess what happened? she got arrested for drugs.

    • She didn’t say that. In her own words: “If it were up to the world I would be a racist/heroin addict manufactured robot.”

Saying you aren’t a heroin addict isn’t the same as saying you don’t use drugs.

Somehow I don’t believe Terry coerces people who already have a following that they could run to. I believe he specifically preys on women who are trying to break into the industry, and thus have no choice but to turn to the court of public opinion, which often finds them guilty based on Richardson’s fame and success.

  11. Was this rant from Sky really necessary? I’ve never seen someone care as much about internet trolls as she does.
