The War On Drugs on Letterman

The War On Drugs are continuing to improve at a scary rate. Their new album Lost In The Dream is one of the year’s very best. And while I remember thinking they were slightly listless onstage when I saw them at SXSW a couple of years ago, their performance on last night’s episode of the Late Show With David Letterman showed a band that’s matured into a grizzled and powerful live presence. On the show, the band played their majestic single “Red Eyes,” with Letterman’s bandleader Paul Shaffer standing in, and they just sounded incredible. Nobody’s going to make any gifs of this performance, and there’s no one thing you can point to and say that they did especially well, but it was a real knock-it-out-of-the-park moment. Check it out below.

Lost In The Dream is out 3/18 on Secretly Canadian.

Can’t wait to see them at Boston Calling in September. They really do seem to get better with every performance.

  2. It’s heartwarming to actively watch The War On Drugs (namely Granduciel) become more and more comfortable up there. Such a beautiful, incendiary performance.

  3. I can point to those drums

  4. A great band making great music. No gimmicks, no lame attempts for attention, no flashiness, just letting the music speak for itself. Wish more bands/musicians could be like that.

  6. We should hold some sort of Indie Song of Summer contest. I think that this would be a real contender!!!

  7. I’ve seen this band a bunch of times and I always thought they were great.

So the other day I stuck this record on in the car. Cruising along at 60 with ‘Red Eyes’ turned up to 11 is such a momentous experience. This band is simply superb.

  9. I love these guys so much, but I have to say, every live video of them I’ve seen has been a bit underwhelming. Especially this song. The recordings are so amazingly produced though, so maybe it’s just hard to live up to that awesomeness?
