I’m pretty sure “Deceptacon” was one of the first songs I ever heard that could fall under the punk umbrella — and I know it was the first thing I heard that Kathleen Hanna was involved in — so it’s always held a special place in my heart for starting me down that path. Also, the song just kicks so much ass. Glasgow’s PAWS have covered the iconic Le Tigre song in a pretty faithful adaptation, except dialing down the electro part of the equation a bit. “When we were at the studio in New York recording Youth Culture Forever we recorded this Le Tigre cover on the last day of tracking,” band member Phillip Taylor said in a press release. “We were listening to a lot of Le Tigre/Bikini Kill up there and when the ‘Deceptacon’ riffs started flying around on the last day we felt like it sounded strong enough to just stick it to tape. We had a little bit of reel left so we figured we wouldn’t waste any and bashed this out in a live take for fun.” They later added vocals from Philadelphia’s Michelle Zauner, who records under the name Japanese Breakfast, after she jumped on the mic during one of their live shows.
