Ought - Once More With Feeling

Montreal art-punks Ought turned a lot of heads earlier this year with their intense, omnivorous debut album More Than Any Other Day. Before the year is out, they’ll follow it up with a new EP called Once More With Feeling…, which I really hope is named after the classic musical Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode. The EP’s opening track, “Pill,” is a five-minute slow-burn that builds confidently, layering organs and guitars on top of each other until it becomes a cathartic groove-maelstrom. Constellation, the band’s label, has shared the song as part of a three-song fall 2014 sampler. In the Soundcloud embed below, you can hear “Pill” start at the 9:59 mark; it follows new songs from Last Ex and Avec Le Soleil Sortant De Sa Bouche.

  1. At first, I didn’t actually believe that this was Ought. It’s quite different from anything I’ve seen or heard them do. It’s worth noting that this EP consists of new recordings of pre-More Than Any Other Day material. Earlier recordings of two of these tracks can be heard on the New Calm EP.
