The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

Before I get into this week’s picks, allow me to point out that Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea made a video for a song called “Booty.” Hype Williams directed it. It is exactly what you expect it to be. It came out a few years ago, and it has five million views already. At this point, anyone who includes anything other than straight ass-jiggling in their music videos deserves some kind of hero’s treatment, as do the people who manage to do something interesting with ass-jiggling. “Booty” is not among this week’s picks. Check out the videos that made the cut below.

5. Mazes – “Salford” (Dir. Plastic Zoo)

I really, really hope I age into becoming one of the people in this bar. If I have to freakily and involuntarily lip-sync a postpunk song to become that, that’s a price I’m willing to pay.

4. Interpol – “Twice As Hard” (Dir. Paul Banks)

This is, admittedly, all a bit on the nose. The song is called “Twice As Hard,” and here we see a bunch of people training to punch harder. But the sheer iconic power of the imagery overwhelms the goofiness.

3. Christopher Owens – “Never Wanna See That Look Again” (Dir. Aaron Brown)

I don’t really know what Christopher Owens is going for anymore, and I’m starting to realize that I never knew. But the moment where he throws the knife is hard.

2. Team Spirit – “Surrender” (Dir. Alex Russek)

Anytime one puppet rips out another puppet’s innards in a music video, that music video is practically guaranteed to appear on this list.

1. Karen O – “Ooo” (Dir. Spike Jonze)

This is a hopelessly biased choice. It’s probably not an official music video, there was no real work put into it, and the artist may not have even known it was being made. But there’s something about the way Spike Jonze moves a camera, about the way he catches light, that just knocks me dead every time. He can pan across to an empty theater, and it’s enough to make your breath catch. Besides, if we all say nice things about it, maybe he’ll make some more music videos.
