The great Compton rapper and producer DJ Quik has been in the game for decades, and he is still finding strange, idiosyncratic new ways to make slick and funky pimp-rap. Quik is a man with ideas, and those ideas are all over The Midnight Life, Quik’s fun-as-hell new album. The album moves from super-nasty gangsta rap to warm jazz-funk to things that subvert any attempt at classification. People like El Debarge, Joi, Suga Free, Mack 10, Dom Kennedy, Bishop Lamont, and Quik’s son David Blake all make guest appearances. There’s also a skit about how hip-hop needs a banjo in it.
