Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

Twas the Shut Up, Dude before Christmas when all through the blog not a reader was trolling not even RubJohn. This week D’Angelo messed up our Best Albums Of 2014 list, but his surprise LP doesn’t have to mess up yours: The Gummy Awards will launch next week — sorry for the delay, there was a tech problem — and you’ll all get a last chance to weigh in on the year’s best music. We also have a lot more great features coming to our year-end coverage. Your best and worst comments are below!

THIS WEEK’S 10 HIGHEST RATED COMMENTS

I think they went to the “Elvis Costello School of Album Releases”. Namely, you can make your album as fucking weird and trippy as you want. But make sure there’s one viable radio friendly single in there.
Elvis did this trick for years. This is why all throughout the 90?s and 00?s you could find a zillion used Elvis Costello CD’s at your local music store.

AND I LOVE THAT TRICK.

No kidding. I thought Premature Evaluations were supposed to mention how an album didn’t measure up to Yeezus. I’m so confused now!

In this world of a third D’Angelo album, it seems down is the new up.

I’m going to Bath and Body Works to buy all of their lotions and then hitting up Yankee Candle so I can properly prepare for this album.

There are 10 good songs on Yeezus, but I’ll assume that as an oversight.

To be fair he looks like the kinda guy who would post stuff like that on 4chan.

I can definitely see that guy taking an unhealthy interest in ethics in video game journalism.

I think technically DIIV is no longer a band but just an entity that produces nightmarish music blog news

It’s a worthy conversation on another website. This is a music website. I don’t like turning music into a political or social debate unless we’re talking about actual lyrical content, not the ignorant online ramblings from an unimportant member of some band. Get my point?

#1 job | Dec 15th Score:-15

Yeezus is evidence that Kanye is content with coasting on his fame. He seems to have decided that trying is either too hard or beneath his self perceived greatness. Even saying there are four good songs on that record is pretty generous (more like four okay-to-middling songs). This is an artist capable of great art but praising his mediocrity isn’t going to convince him to actually push forward or innovate.

THIS WEEK’S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S CHOICE

a.j.howard09 | Dec 12th Score:14

On December 2, on the 50 Best Albums List, I commented:

“But here’s a question. What’s going to this year’s “Beyoncé,” the surprise December release that comes out too late to get its rightful place on these lists? Can I just be a wishful thinker and list the new D’Angelo album we were promised this year at #1? That would truly be the gift that keeps on giving.”

You’re welcome, America.
