Honeyblood – “No Big Deal” (Stereogum Premiere)

Fuzzy Scottish duo Honeyblood sound uncharacteristically clean-toned on their latest, “No Big Deal,” a patient song that unfolds more like a short story. Singer Stina Marie Claire Tweeddale starts in the middle, recounting the general complexities of a thorny romantic predicament: “We both lay there like two people can do / And I don’t love you too.” Before long, she’s deep in the details — sharing laughs, wondering about futures, yearning to borrow sweatshirts — as the rhythm steadies the indecision of her inner monologue. Like the infectious tracks on the band’s self-titled debut (“Super Rat” in particular), there’s a great payoff to “No Big Deal,” when muddy guitars finally lurch the song into a volcanic chorus. Listen to it below.
