Every music festival emits an unnecessary air of pretension, but SXSW is probably the least easily mocked. No one’s walking around in a bikini and furry boots (and if they are, I haven’t seen them), and for the most part, Austin is crawling with industry folks, which makes Jimmy Kimmel punking attendees all the more enjoyable. Nothing is funnier than watching a bunch of people who are supposed to know the who’s-who of SXSW rave about Wiz Khalifa’s little brother “Cheez Wiz Khalifa” and “Vlad & The Putins.” Kimmel put together a similar clip at Coachella back in 2013, and I’m fairly certain that they’re both staged — there’s just no way that someone could talk about the imaginary “DJ Cialis” with that much conviction.
