Spoon are a great studio band, one that knows how to hold back. Their records often feel painstakingly assembled, stripped of everything the songs might not need. So it’s fascinating to hear them at the barest possible level. Last August, Britt Daniel and Jim Eno appeared on the podcast Song Exploder to talk about writing their They Want My Soul single “Inside Out.” And now the podcast has shared a voice-and-piano demo version of the song. It’s proof, if we needed it, that Spoon’s songs are plenty strong even before they put all the pieces together in the studio. Listen below.
