Drainolith – “Inside And Outside (Bog’s Blues)” (Stereogum Premiere)

Drainolith is the solo project of Alexander Moskos, the Canadian experimental artist who made a name for himself playing in Montreal’s noise-punk band AIDS Wolf. In 2011, AIDS Wolf released their LP Ma Vie Banale Avant-Garde before disbanding the following year. Since the band’s breakup, Moskos has released one full-length under the Drainloth moniker titled Fighting!, and is set to drop its follow-up this summer. Hysteria is the result of two years spent working in various studios alongside Nate Young, of Detroit’s industrial noise band Wolf Eyes, and Neil Hagerty of D.C.’s Royal Trux. On “Inside And Outside (Bog’s Blues),” the record’s second single, Moskos’ concave vocal performance contorts and rearranges itself to keep up with layer upon layer of melodious noise. When Moskos sings the line, “I looked out the window and tried,” his voice has all of the same too-bored-to-stand-up-straight appeal of Richard Hell, without the snarky affect. “Inside And Outside (Bog’s Blues)” is a hyper-involved solo work, something not easily mimicked or cross-referenced.
