Chicago bedroom-pop experimentalist J Fernandez is readying his debut album Many Levels Of Laughter, the follow-up to his excellent Memorize Now EP from 2014. We’ve already heard the MIDI-ridden soother “Read My Mind” and today Fernandez has shared a “Between The Channels,” a mumbly, jangling track that occasionally includes bits of a warm, stunning string sections. Imagine you’re sitting on the couch flicking the remote through your programming and you’ve got the gist of this song’s schizophrenia. It lives up to its name completely, flickering into spoken samples, Fernandez’s demure falsetto, and guitars that careen and chug, pushing the melody forward to the next channel. I’m starting to think this guy is incapable of making a bad song. Listen.
