Roger Lion – “A Dead Man’s Song” (Stereogum Premiere)

Joe Pernice is adding another band on top of Massachusetts alt-country combo Scud Mountain Boys and Pernice Brothers, the 10-plus member conglomerate including his brother, Bob. Pernice is now teaming up with Seattle instrumentalist and producer Budo, signed to Minneapolis rap/hip-hop label Rhymesayers. The duo calls themselves Roger Lion, most likely after the French director of the same name.

“A Dead Man’s Song” is the first single off Roger Lion’s debut September release on Team Love Records. Unlike the acoustics of Scud Mountain Boys and power pop of Pernice Brothers, the haunting vocals and subdued horns here matched with a catchy drum beat bring about easy comparisons to Thom Yorke’s side project, as if “A Dead Man’s Song” is an Atoms For Peace song at half-speed (with less falsetto). Listen.

Roger Lion’s self-titled debut album is out 9/18 on Team Love Records. Pre-order it here.
