Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

Tomorrow we’re gonna recognize the 239th anniversary of America’s independence and the 10th anniversary of Sufjan Stevens’ epic independent LP Illinois. In honor of the day, Hrishikesh Hirway of the great music podcast Song Exploder asked me and a few dozen writers and entertainers (including Jim James, Matt Berninger, Nick Zammuto, Will Butler, and other musicians we cover here) to select a track for his Declaration Of Codependence playlist. The concept is 50 Love Songs For The Fourth Of July, inspired by #LoveWins as much as patriotism. So instead of my usual July 4th song, I picked a romantic Joe Jackson track. You can check out the playlist here. Your best and worst comments of the week — mostly about Beach House, Morrissey, and Kendrick — are below.

THIS WEEK’S 10 HIGHEST RATED COMMENTS

Between “Silver Soul” and “Wild”, I’d say Track 2 of any new Beach House album is a sure-fire pantaloon-jazzer.

The first time I heard Alright I thought the line was “”We hate pulled-pork” and was genuinely like ‘damn, I thought he was cool man pulled pork is the best’

In my excitement, I missed the “start at the 30:00 mark” and was sitting here, mouth agape, thinking “Holy fuck, Beach House really changed on this one.”

THIS WEEK’S 5 LOWEST RATED COMMENTS

Once again, a musician choosing to open his mouth about an issue that A. he has absolutely no idea what he is talking about and B. Nobody cares or wants to know his opinion. Honestly though, it’s a win for Israel. Thurston Moore hasn’t put out anything good in over 15 years. They have better musicians who are delighted to play there like Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen. This is just an attempt of Thurston Moore trying to become relevant again.

When you speak of a “nationwide institutional structure of racism and oppression” it sounds like you are alluding to some evil metaphysical virus that has infected the collective unconscious of white people. If that’s what you’re alluding to, that’s an extraordinary claim that requires an extraordinary disclosure of evidence to support it.

If that’s not what you’re getting at, then perhaps you’re suggesting that white people have an inherent design flaw that makes them carry around an ill will toward black people. This too is an extraordinary claim for which the burden of proof is on you to explain the nature of this pathology in as much scientific detail as possible, to make it discernible to all of us.

The social sciences are littered with all manner of vague buzz phrases like “institutional racism and oppression” which muddy the waters and don’t help us understand…whatever point you’re trying to make?

From what I can tell white people are treating black people very well in America. Whites have given blacks advantages when applying for colleges and jobs. They have paid trillions of tax dollars to provide them with education, housing, social programs, and healthcare for decades. Most white people are kind and polite to black people in social situations, being very conscientious with their language so as not to offend anyone.

What more do we need to do in order to be good social justice warriors? Just tell me what you want me to do, man. I just need a little help understanding your gameplan. I’m probably game for whatever you have in mind, as long as it doesn’t entail self flagellation and endless atonement for the original sin of “white privilege,” that most permanent of stains on my soul.

Speaking of which, why do we never accost Asian Americans for smuggling “yellow privilege” around with them? Asian Americans outperform white Americans on average in school and in terms of wealth…and they do all of this while being a small minority! WTF? Those gooks need to stop being so fucking privileged!! I’M SICK OF IT! THE PRIVILEGE HAS TO STOP NOW! This nano-aggression will not stand, man!

And the United States will continue to defend Israel, as they absolutely should. The only democracy there. Our only friend there. Anti-Israel=Anti-America. Everyone is celebrating the Supreme Court ruling today. Well in the palestinian countries and other countries who would be considered enemies of Israel, people are still hanged for being gay. Israel rocks. They took a piece of desert and turned it into a nice country with a metropolis city and a resort area like any other westernized world. Artists who perform in Israel definitely get brownie points from me.
