Fern Mayo – “Going Somewhere” (Stereogum Premiere)

Katie Capri has one of the best voices in the Brooklyn scene right now — I saw Fern Mayo live countless times before I ever listened to them on record, and every time I was blown away by how great her voice is. A lot of bands nowadays have competent but reaching singers, so it’s refreshing to hear someone who not only has a great voice, but knows how to use and control it. Capri’s voice is a highlight on Fern Mayo’s upcoming debut, Happy Forever, but it’s not the only focal point: the seasick rhythm of their songs, the tight melodies, the aching lyrics. “Going Somewhere” is the first single and first professionally recorded Fern Mayo track out there, and it has all that going for it and more. This song was written in one big burst of inspiration the day before the band went to record their debut, and that immediacy and naturalism shows. Listen below.

Happy Forever is out 10/2 via Miscreant Records.
