Now Deadmau5 & Jack Ü Are Fighting Over NY Times‘ “Where Are Ü Now” Explainer
Jack Ü, the duo of Diplo and Skrillex, just scored a massive hit with the uncanny, lovely Justin Bieber collaboration “Where Are Ü Now,” possibly resurrecting Bieber’s career in the process. And in a very cool new interactive New York Times story, Diplo, Skrillex, and Bieber all explain how the song came into being. It’s got a few fascinating bits of trivia. (The song’s central riff, it turns out, isn’t a flute. It’s a Bieber vocal, warped and distorted until we can’t recognize it as such.) But along with all that, it’s got at least a couple of characteristically dumb Bieber quotes, like this one: “It’s expensive, you know what I mean? It’s like the sounds that are used are not cheap. They’re very expensive-sounding sounds.” Diplo and Skrillex’s EDM peer Deadmau5 has already publicly clowned the song, causing the normally-pleasant Skrillex to call him “an asshole” in public. And apparently that quote was too much for him. Last night, as Vulture points out, he let loose with yet another Twitter tirade:
