Greta Kline, bka Frankie Cosmos, has been putting out whimsical DIY pop songs for ages, though evidence of her prolific output was trod on when she was “discovered” in the lead-up to the release of her last album, Zentropy. Frankie Cosmos is selling out shows across the country now, but if you’re interested in hearing the progression of her musicianship, her rich Bandcamp catalogue should satiate you. In the meantime, she’s announced a new EP due out this November. It’s Frankie Cosmos’ first release on Bayonet Records, and today, she’s debuted the EP’s first single, “Sand.” Kline was raised in New York, and evidence of that can be heard throughout her catalogue, but those locally-rendered lyrics don’t always move you in the same way that the very particular situational description in “Sand” might if you’ve ever spent any time in and around Greenwich Village. Kline told Pitchfork that the song was inspired by the changing seasons: “I wrote it in the beginning of this spring, while getting excited about just being able to be outside longer and spend time in NYC, and coming up with date ideas (like touching all the books on the racks outside the Strand).” Here are the lyrics:
