BBC Announces Sound Of 2016 Longlist

Every year, the BBC assembles a crew of tastemakers who attempt to figure out which artists will have big years. They pick 15 artists for a particular year’s longlist, and then they go about narrowing that list down and picking a winner. And the BBC, unlike plenty of other media outlets, has a pretty strong track record when it comes to picking out prospective big deals. In past years, they’ve picked Adele, Ellie Goulding, Haim, Sam Smith, and, most recently, the impossible-to-hate house-pop outfit Years & Years. The BBC has just unveiled this year’s list, and it’s a little light on names that we already know — which, in a case like this, is probably a good thing. But the list does include a few artists whose work we’ve posted, including Nao, Billie Marten, Jack Garratt, Frances, and Rat Boy. It’s also got the R&B singer Alessia Cara, who seems like a strong pick, and Mabel, the daughter of Neneh Cherry and Massive Attack producer Booga Bear. Below, check out the list.

This year’s longlist:

Izzy Bizu
Blossoms
Alessia Cara
Loyle Carner
Frances
Jack Garratt
J Hus
Dua Lipa
Mabel
Billie Marten
Mura Masa
Nao
Rat Boy
Section Boyz
WSTRN

The BBC will announce a winner 1/8. Team Billie Marten.
