Heron Oblivion - "Oriar" (Stereogum Premiere)

Heron Oblivion entirely comprises musicians with an established pedigree in West Coast psychedelic music, and their combined efforts couldn’t sound more sublime and exemplary. The San Francisco-based quartet includes members from Comets On Fire, Espers, Sic Alps, and Assemble Head of Sunburst Sound — specifically, that’s Meg Baird, Ethan Miller, Noel Von Harmonson, and Charlie Saufley — and they all come together with sharp unity and focus on their debut single “Oriar.” Expressive guitar lines laced with feedback sprawl out again and again without trailing away too far. Baird’s serene voice harkens back to ’60s folk singers, subdued in a way that lends special gravity without being bombastic. Frankly, the group sounds exactly like what psychedelic rock should sound like. They signed on to Sub Pop two months ago and are releasing their self-titled debut LP next March. Listen to “Oriar” below and check out the tracklist.
