Spookyland – “God’s Eyes” (Stereogum Premiere)

On “God’s Eyes,” Spookyland sound something like a classic rock combination of Kurt Vile and Wavves. The first single off the Australian band’s debut album Beauty Already Beautiful manages to straddle varying genres and emotions coherently through a dramatic gradient in its dynamics. It starts out sparse, its weighty but melodic guitar licks matched with some ethereal blips and the nasal jolt of lead singer Marcus Gordon’s signature vocals. Throughout the song, however, what begins as almost a folk-rock song develops the qualities of an anthem as it’s fleshed out by big guitars and booming drums, culminating in a climactic chorus. It sounds nostalgic yet undeniably fresh, and you can hear it below.
