Beacon – “IM U” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

Band To Watch alums Beacon have shared another promising track from their upcoming album Escapements. “IM U” is a subtle yet cinematic synth-pop song, and it arrives today with a striking video by director Charles Bergquist. The clip begins with scenes of one man dragging another’s body across the desert, and it continues from there with visions of mysterious cloaked figures, wood stacked for an ominous bonfire, and lots of gorgeous depictions of the scenery. Bernquist’s work manages to leave a huge impression while also leaving a lot to the imagination; watch it below.

Both members of Beacon shared statements about the “IM U” video. Here’s Jacob Gossett:

IM U is a track that has been with us for quite some time. It was born out of live performances in the very early Beacon years. It’s gone through a few different iterations, almost making it onto the last EP. It was one of those songs that we really wanted to get just right, and each time we revisited the idea we got a little closer to its current form.

We were very lucky to work with Charles Bergquist on the video for IM U. We met up with him last year when we played in San Diego. He had just started pre-production on the video and told us about some of these drone landscape shots he was planning. Those are some of my favorite moments in the video, where the horizon looks like it just never ends.

And here’s Thomas Mullarney III with more background on the song:

IM U is a patient arrangement, beginning with a single note pulsing underneath my vocals that eventually builds into a flood of harmonies and synthesizers. The song is about wanting to carve away the dysfunction and desire that defines us to become something more compatible.

It became an important point of collaboration for us with the addition of Rory O’Connor’s (Nitemoves, Tycho) drums….

Escapements is out 2/5 on Ghostly International. Pre-order it here. And for NYC residents and prospective travelers, the band is playing Bowery Ballroom on 2/11. Get tickets here.
