Audacity – “Umbrellas” (Stereogum Premiere)

So-Cal punks Audacity’s latest Hyper Vessels single is plenty anthemic, but it’s equally laden with all of the dirt and grit that lines the foundations of garage rock. From a band that “can boast their 10-year anniversary before their members are legally old enough to rent a car,” “Umbrellas” has an energy that embodies punk through its own youthful defiance. Audacity’s Matthew Schmalfeld offered some background:

“Umbrellas” is about living in a world where goals aren’t set high enough, and the feeling of stagnancy you get when hanging out in the same places and doing the same things all the time. Stereotypically, alcoholics love booze, dogs love bones, and umbrellas love the rain. Kind of like a “you are what you eat or do” principle, except you don’t know what you ate or did, and so you struggle to find your identity in a world of lowered standards.
