Music Band – “Day Stealer” (Stereogum Premiere)

Nashville rock trio Music Band may have a name that’s impossible to search, but their sound is straightforward. The self-described “honest-to-goodness rock and roll” purveyors are set to release their debut LP, Wake Up Laughing, on April Fool’s Day. The lead single, “Day Stealer,” opens with nothing but guitar for a good eight bars that lulls you into a groove. From there, the song slowly builds into the perfect balance of energy and commanding rhythmic guitar strokes that contrast with deceptively penetrating lyrics. The hook, “She’s all I ever wanted/ If all I ever wanted was a lie,” serves as the crescendo with all of the harmonies and fuzz coming together to punch up the subdued energy. My only gripe is that it’s too short. I could have this ramp up and down for another couple minutes or so. Check it out.
