Benedek – “Coolin'”

The funk in LA is hard to find. There are so many industries convening and looking to move forward that most of the artists there rarely take retro steps back. But it’s definitely there. An underground beat scene has been thriving in LA’s dermis for years. Madlib, Flying Lotus, and Knxwledge were all products of and contributors to that scene, and there are many other aspiring cats that pay homage to music generations past. One such producer is LA native Nicky Benedek.

Benedek combines the funk and soul he grew up on with an arsenal of analog synthesizers, drum machines, and electric guitars. Case in point: On the title track of his fast-approaching Coolin’ EP, groovy synth basslines, bouncy percussion, and dreamy electric guitar combine for a slick excursion with a smooth jazz feel. It borders on the jazz you would hear on LA’s 94.7 The Wave but it is too experimental and genre-melding to be something you would hear in your dentist’s office. Groove out below.

The Coolin’ EP is out 3/11 via Leaving Records. Pre-order is available here.
