MUNA – “Winterbreak” Video

Gloom-pop trio and Band To Watch MUNA have had some really good tracks floating around without a home for a while now. The excellent “Promise” is what earned them BTW honors. Singles “So Special” and “Loudspeaker” continued to pique our interest, but were sadly taken off of SoundCloud. But now we know why as those three tracks and their latest offering “Winterbreak” will now comprise the 4-song EP, Loudspeaker.

Along with the announcement comes the visual treatment for “Winterbreak.” The song is about chasing that elusive first high of a relationship despite strong hints that person may not be right for you for the long haul. The emotions of that situation are evoked by pulsing rhythms and piercing lyrics, and lifted by a humongous hook. The Josh Chertoff-directed visuals has the trio chilling in the suburbs outside of LA. They wanted to capture the feeling of returning home as an evolved person with eclectic experiences, and the dissonance that sometimes sets off internally — the haunting side of familiarity. Here’s what the band had to say about the clip:

The “Winterbreak” video is about the dual experience of belonging and non-belonging involved in returning to a former home. Often when we’ve visited the places we grew up in, we’ve found ourselves in the strange space between nostalgia and total regression…Generally for us, the only solace has been really great friends. So we tried to show some of that.

The ambivalence present in the differing scenarios for the song and video meld perfectly. Check it out.
