C.W. Stoneking – “Get On The Floor” (Stereogum Premiere)

Between C.W. Stoneking and Hiatus Kaiyote, I might have to take my ass to Australia. These Aussies got some soul — Hiatus Kaiyote with their unique brand of “future soul” and C.W. Stoneking with his retro blues-rock. Stoneking is set to drop his third full-length offering Gon’ Boogaloo this summer, and it is definitely aptly named. The lead single, “Get On The Floor” is also fittingly titled because that’s exactly what it will make you do. Classic electric chicken grease chords, a three-piece backup harmony, rhythmic bass, and claps fitting for a jitterbug or bouncy two-step combine for a feel reminiscent of early Ray Charles. Stoneking sandwiches a quick verse between his role as the signifier with highly melodic, gravelly yelps in call-and-response mode with his background singers. It’s a fun, loose dance jaunt that runneth over with soul. So dust off your old Charleston or Mashed Potato because Throwback Thursday is in full effect. Check it out.
