Popcaan – “VVIP” Video (NSFW)

Dancehall crooner Popcaan has been doing his thing for quite some time now, but of course it took Drake’s vulture tendencies to cast him into the limelight. It’s still unclear whether a Drake cosign — through stealing, borrowing, appropriating, or whatever you want to call it — is a curse or a blessing, but it’s certainly bittersweet to see artists get some shine from uncredited endorsements. It took a while for Popcaan and dancehall’s influence to turn into an official feature with Drake using his voice on “Know Yourself” and “No Tellin'” and the dancehall artist’s “Way Up” catchphrase on Big Sean’s “Blessings.” It’s discouraging to think he couldn’t cross over to American success without the pass from gatekeepers and a more palatable, diluted version of his music readying American audiences for his sound.

But Popcaan’s music is still explicitly uncompromised and true to dancehall roots, and “VVIP” is a raw example. It was damn near impossible to find a frame without naked or scantily clad lady lumps to feature for this post, but it’s fitting for the direct sexuality of the song. Overt sensuality is one of the many characteristics of dancehall music that is subtracted when the aesthetic is incorporated in pop songs like Justin Bieber’s “Sorry.” I’m not saying there should be some sort of tag accompanying the popular Caribbean siren drop to announce that dancehall influenced a song, but there is a fine line between borrowing and stealing that should be examined. Anyway, someone has written about this in much more depth here, and I encourage you to check it out. And watch the “VVIP” for a taste of actual dancehall, just don’t watch it at work.
